Elijah Affi, Makua Afiomah and Solomon Dawudu shaped Amarachi Nwauwa’s career as mentors, and Elms Sans is named for them. The name also points at the elm tree. Nwauwa, working with Gida Type Studio, wanted a utilitarian geometric sans that would hold steady inside a design system for years, on screen and in print, and the family that reached Google Fonts in October 2025 is built for a long working life.
It takes its cue from the early geometric models but warms the proportions slightly, enough that it can carry text as well as headings. Letters are on the wide side. Set a paragraph and you will fit fewer words per line than with a narrower sans.
The source was drawn as a variable design with weight and italic axes over 3 masters; the download here gives the 18 static fonts, Thin to Black, each with an italic. Those italics keep the exact width of their romans, so you can switch a word to italic in a tight UI label and nothing shifts.
What the figures can do:
- lining or old style, in tabular or proportional spacing
- a slashed zero, plus subscripts and superscripts for formulas and footnotes
Vietnamese is supported now, with Sub-Saharan African Latin listed as still in development. For a product team wanting 1 family to cover dashboards and annual reports alike, we would put it on the shortlist.
