M PLUS 1p pairs proportional Latin, where an i is narrower than an m, with Japanese set to a fixed full width, every kana and kanji in the same square.

Coji Morishita and the M+ Fonts Project built it as 1 member of a larger superfamily, which their notes divide up like this:

  • 4 families with proportional Latin
  • 3 with Latin at a fixed half width
  • 2 with fixed full width kana variations

A separate Rounded M+ project then made versions with rounded terminals.

The kana are the part we like most. Straight strokes sit against curves that were drawn by hand, and the 2 kinds of line play off each other through a paragraph. The Latin was meant to be relaxed and a little refined, and it keeps out of the way.

There are 7 weights, Thin to Black, skipping a 200 and a 600. More than 8,000 glyphs reach past Japanese into Greek, Cyrillic, Hebrew and Vietnamese, so a Tokyo company page with a Russian version could stay in 1 family. Google’s copy comes from version 1.061g, released upstream in April 2016 and slightly modified for Google Fonts, which has listed it since June 2017.
