Jaldi means soon in Hindi, and the name is a joke with a partner. The Latin half comes from Asap, whose name stands for “As Soon As Possible”, and Nicolas Silva and Pablo Cosgaya drew a Devanagari to sit next to it. Omnibus-Type, a foundry in Argentina, runs the project.
The trick it inherits from Asap is about widths. A letter is the same width in Regular as in Bold, so a line of text keeps its length when you switch a word to bold, and nothing reflows. On a web page or in an app, where a button label might go bold on hover or a selected menu item thickens, that saves the layout from twitching.
The Devanagari has slightly rounded corners and a contemporary, unfussy build. It was meant for screen reading and webfonts first.
Further back, Asap came out of Ancha, a design by Pablo Cosgaya and Hector Gatti made with Andres Torresi. 2 weights only, Regular and Bold. Is that enough? For an interface, mostly yes.
