Cuprum is Latin for copper, and Jovanny Lemonad chose the name with a shrug. Copper is not gold and not silver, he wrote; nobody casts medals from it, only pots. That modesty runs all through his note on the font. He drew it in 2006, working from the example of Miles Newlyn, and admits he no longer much likes it as it stands, as he has learned to make far better fonts since.

We think he is too hard on it. It is a narrow grotesque, so a headline in it packs a lot of words into a column, and it comes in Latin and Cyrillic both, which suits a Russian and English layout sharing a page.

The family started with 4 styles. A later version 2 moved the sources to Glyphs, reworked and compressed the kerning, widened the Cyrillic to Google’s Cyrillic Plus set, and added Vietnamese drawn by Nhung Nguyen of CrystalType. What you get here are 8 styles, Regular, Medium, Semi Bold and Bold, each with an italic.

Lemonad also drew Days One, El Messiri, Philosopher, Russo One and Yeseva One, among others in the Google library.
