Songs from the lake villages
Toba, Karo, Dairi, Mandailing, Simalungun and Angkola, the Batak languages of Sumatra, share a script that has been in use since the 14th century and was standardized in the 1850s. It declined through the 20th century and has lately been coming back. It is an abugida, written left to right, and both vertically and horizontally.
Noto Sans Batak covers the 64 characters of its Unicode block in a plain sans, 1 Regular, with Latin and Latin Extended for translations and notes. A school primer or a museum label is well served by it; with no bold, emphasis has to come from size.
