Jaro takes its name and its starting point from Jaroslav Benda, whose work Agyei Archer used as the source for this display sans. Archer led the design, with Céline Hurka and Mirko Velimirović, and Google added it in March 2024.
The big thing in a set line is the lowercase. It reaches more than 4/5 of the height of the capitals, which makes a word in lowercase look almost as heavy as 1 in caps and keeps a headline readable on a phone screen when the size has to come down. The letters are on the narrow side too.
In its original form Jaro is variable, with an optical size axis that changes the drawing between big display and small print. What this page offers is 1 static Regular. It has 997 characters in it, which is generous: Vietnamese, the extended Latin accents, fractions, superscripts and subscripts, and tabular figures for a price list.
Headlines and posters, then, with a quieter text face underneath, since 1 weight leaves nothing for emphasis.
