Zen Kaku Gothic New is the everyday sans of Yoshimichi Ohira’s Zen Fonts, the big group of Japanese families he opened to the public with Google Fonts.
“New” separates it from a sibling. Zen Kaku Gothic Antique is the classical take with more orthodox letterforms, while New is the contemporary cut, simple in its drawing, and Ohira’s pitch is that it gives fine typesetting without the detailed manual adjustment a professional would otherwise spend time on.
Light through Black, in 5 weights, carry kana, kanji, Latin and Cyrillic in 7,737 characters. For an app or a company site in Japanese it is a family you can set once and leave alone. The Black is heavy enough for a sign.
