Lato was meant for 1 company. Łukasz Dziedzic started it in Warsaw in the summer of 2010 as part of a corporate identity for a large client, and when the client went off in another stylistic direction he was left holding a type family, which he released to everyone. The name is Polish for summer.
He wanted it to pull 2 ways at once: vanish inside a paragraph, then show some personality when set big. The capitals carry the classical proportions he was after, and the semi-rounded corners were meant to feel warm. “Serious but friendly” was his own summary.
This build is the older Western and Polish one, 263 characters, so Ł and ż are covered and Cyrillic and Greek are not. 5 weights, 100 up to 900, and each has an italic that runs noticeably narrower than its roman.
Mind the gap between Regular and Bold. There is no 500 and no 600, and a design system that leans on a medium weight for its buttons will feel the hole. For a long article in English or Polish it holds the page well.
