Fira started on a phone. Mozilla and Telefonica commissioned it while they were building Firefox OS, and it had to read well across a long list of handsets with very different screens and rendering. The name was chosen to call up fire and light.
The design came out of Erik Spiekermann’s FF Meta, at the time Mozilla’s brand typeface. Spiekermann, Ralph du Carrois, Anja Meiners and Botio Nikoltchev of Carrois in Berlin reworked it into something a little wider and calmer, tuned for small screens, with Patryk Adamczyk on the Mozilla side. It first shipped in 2013 with 4 weights and had grown to 16 by May 2014. Mozilla stepped away in 2016 at version 4.2, and the foundry bBox Type carried the work on into FiraGO.
So there are 3 widths with italics, plus a Mono. This Extra Condensed is the tightest of them.
On this page: 9 weights, Thin to Black, each with an italic. The feature list is long, with small caps, old style and lining figures, tabular figures, a slashed zero and 4 stylistic sets, and the coverage reaches Greek, Cyrillic and Vietnamese. We like it best where space is scarce and the text still has to be read, a sidebar of statistics, table headers, a phone screen with long German words.
