A treasure of letters
Mingzat means treasure of letters in Lepcha, the language whose script it carries. SIL International built it on Jason Glavy’s JG Lepcha, a custom-encoded font, and with his permission turned the design into a proper Unicode font.
SIL keeps a team of type designers for lesser-served writing systems, the scripts of smaller communities living next to much larger language groups, and Mingzat came out together with new fonts for Tai Viet and Yi. UNESCO puts about 40% of the world’s estimated 7,000 languages at risk of extinction. SIL’s argument is that without fonts, these communities cannot live online at all.
