It started life in 2012 as Source Sans Pro. Paul D. Hunt drew it for Adobe, a sans meant to work well in user interfaces. The 3 in the current name marks the version 3 release of 2021, when the Pro was dropped.
Its roots are American. Hunt looked to the gothics Morris Fuller Benton drew for American Type Founders, News Gothic and Franklin Gothic among them, and gave his version a larger x-height and wider letters, both helpful on a screen. The italics go another way, with a humanist, pen-made influence in place of the gothic models.
It is also 1 branch of a bigger Adobe family. Source Serif, the monospaced Source Code Pro, and the Chinese, Japanese and Korean families Source Han Sans and Source Han Serif all share the Source name, and the files here still carry it as a reserved font name.
The family on this page has 16 styles, Extra Light at 200 to Black at 900 with an italic for each, and 1,615 characters per style across extended Latin, Greek, Cyrillic and Vietnamese. The OpenType list is long: small caps, old style and proportional figures, a slashed zero, fractions, superscripts and subscripts, and 10 stylistic sets. We’d use the Regular for interface text and long documentation alike and keep Black for a big slide title.
