Songs of old Sylhet
Syloti Nagri may date from the 14th century, though the first solid evidence of it comes from the 17th. It is an Indic abugida, written left to right, used in Bangladesh for the Sylheti language, and since the middle of the 20th century the Bengali and Latin scripts have almost entirely pushed it aside.
For anyone reviving or studying the script, a working digital font counts for a lot. Noto Sans Syloti Nagri covers the 68 characters of its Unicode block in a plain sans drawn by the Monotype Design Team for Google’s Noto project, with Latin included, and it joined Google Fonts in 2020. 1 Regular style. The script needs software that handles complex text layout to display correctly.
