Roboto was drawn with 2 tempers in it. The skeleton is mechanical and most of the forms are geometric, yet the curves open out in a friendly way, and Christian Robertson let each letter keep its natural width where many grotesques squeeze or stretch theirs to hold a rigid beat. So it reads with a rhythm you would expect from a humanist sans or even a serif, more than its engineered look lets on.
ParaType and Font Bureau share the credit on Google Fonts, where it has been since January 2013. It belongs to a bigger clan, with Roboto Slab, Roboto Mono and Roboto Condensed as relatives, and a 2020 rebuild folded weight and width into a variable font. What you download here are the 18 static styles, Thin through Black, an italic with each.
In width it matches Arial almost exactly. Swap 1 for the other on a page and the line breaks barely move.
The files go further than a system sans needs to. Real small caps and a feature that turns capitals into them, old style figures as well as lining, fractions, 7 stylistic sets, Greek and Cyrillic and the Vietnamese accents.
Our hesitation is about identity. For a help center or an app it is hard to argue with, but a brand that wants a voice of its own will find it says very little.
