Every font in Arima Madurai was tried out on low-resolution phones before it shipped, and then hinted with ttfautohint for Windows. Natanael Gama and Joana Correia, working at NDISCOVER, a foundry in Portugal, wanted a display face for headlines and brand names on the web, and the cheap phone screen was the test it had to pass.
So the edges are soft and the feel is calligraphic, with contrast kept low enough that the thin parts of a stroke don’t vanish on a coarse display. Google Fonts took it on in August 2016 in 8 weights, Thin to Black, and these are the weights you get here.
On Google Fonts the family has since been retired in favor of Arima, a variable version from May 2022 that adds Malayalam and a Greek drawn by Rosalie Wagner. Bunny Fonts still serves it under the old name. For a mobile banner or a café’s web header we would go with Regular or Medium; the Black is loud enough for a logo.
