Dan Sayers took 725 fonts from the Google Fonts collection and averaged them. The outlines and the metrics of Averia Libre both come out of that process, which he wrote up at iotic.com/averia, so nobody drew these letters in the usual sense; they are what the whole crowd has in common.
The name plays on this. Avería is Spanish for a breakdown or mechanical damage, and it shares a root with the English “average”.
There are 6 styles, Light, Regular and Bold, each with an italic, and the italics are not much narrower than the romans. The character set stays close to the Western European one, 231 characters, and there are no OpenType features, so French sets fine while a Polish text will run into trouble. English headings suit it, and we would love to see it on a magazine piece about statistics.
If you like the idea, Sayers ran the same experiment into separate families too: Averia Serif Libre, Averia Sans Libre and Averia Gruesa Libre.
