In Spanish, avería means a breakdown or mechanical damage, and the word shares a root with the English “average”. Both meanings fit what Dan Sayers did.
His method was to take a pile of fonts and average them. The original Avería superfamily came from the fonts on his own computer. For the Libre families the pile was every font in the Google Web Fonts project as of 9 November 2011, all 725 of them, with every metric the product of that averaging, and a glyph only made it in if most of the source fonts had it. He wrote the process up on his iotic site for anyone curious how it was done.
A result we liked: set a run of lowercase in it and in Arial and the 2 come out within 0.6% of each other in width. Average 725 fonts and you land almost on top of the most ordinary sans there is.
The Sans comes in Light, Regular and Bold, each with an italic that keeps nearly the same width as its roman. Averia Libre, Averia Serif Libre and Averia Gruesa Libre are its siblings from the same experiment.
