As a schoolgirl Shantell Martin dreaded spelling tests. Out of school, words were something else for her, a way to make art and let off feeling, and in her early 20s she found out why reading and writing had always been so hard. She went on to become a British visual artist known for drawing with words, in the Oculus at the World Trade Center, across the screens of Times Square, on the Lincoln Center stage where the New York City Ballet performs, and in a collaboration with Kendrick Lamar at Art Basel in Miami.
The font grows out of her lettering. She made it with Stephen Nixon of Arrow Type and with Anya Danilova, hoping to get other people to have fun with writing.
The family on this page has 12 styles: Light, Regular, Medium, Semi Bold, Bold and Extra Bold, each with an italic. Latin, Vietnamese and Cyrillic are covered. There are 4 stylistic sets and contextual alternates, and tabular figures, fractions and a slashed zero sit underneath for anyone who wants it in a product.
We like the Medium for a picture book or a menu board. In small interface text the wobbly strokes start to look fussy, so keep it for the bigger lines.
