Under the color in Bitcount Single Ink sits Petr van Blokland’s minimum grid. 5 pixels of x-height is the least that will draw an a and an e; a row more on top for ascenders and a row underneath for descenders bring it to 5 pixels wide and 7 high, and every Bitcount letter lives in that space.
From those 35 pixels he built a very large family. Styles vary in how accents are articulated, in stems 1 or 2 pixels thick (Single and Double), in roman or slanted, normal or condensed, and in the shape of the pixel itself, from small squares to large circles.
Ink is the color version. Bitcount Single Ink is built on COLRv1, and its point is layering: stack several copies of a word in different colors and pixel shapes, nudge 1 layer a little off center, and you get shadows, highlights and a 3D look with no images involved. The variable font goes much further, with 11 axes that control weight, slant, pixel shape and size and the offset of 2 color layers. The static styles come in 9 weights from Thin to Black.
Van Blokland lists uses that run from the obvious to the charming:
- decorative, multi-colored headlines
- running LED displays and other hardware with a fixed grid
- tiny text on low-resolution screens and printers
- a template for physical lettering in LEGO bricks, flowerpots or the lit windows of a building
Small caps, old-style figures and 7 stylistic sets come along too. It arrived in January 2025, and for a retro game screen or a festival poster it is hard to beat.
