A Note On The Page

Edu NSW ACT Hand Pre · Regular

A short letter, set in the family.

Thursday afternoon

Dear Alex,

I left the book by the window. There is a note on page twenty-three that I thought you would like. Bring it along on Thursday; we can finish the conversation over coffee.

See you there.

Tina Anderson is a software engineer who turned to educational apps when her grandchildren reached school age, and Corey Anderson is a graphic artist and calligrapher. Between them they drew the letters that children in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory are taught to write.

The 2 systems start in different places. In NSW pupils begin with Foundation Manuscript, in the ACT with Foundation Print, and around Year 3 or 4 both move on to Foundation Precursive. This font is that precursive stage, which is what “Pre” stands for: it is built from the Edu NSW ACT Hand source with a stylistic set locked in.

It belongs to the AU School Handwriting Fonts, an English-language project drawn to follow Australian school standards, led by Eben Sorkin of Sorkin Type, David Berlow of Font Bureau, Dave Crossland of Google Fonts and Chris Betcher of Google for Education. Some of the thinking shows in small decisions. The Regular weight is meant to match the line a real pencil makes, and overshoots at the cap height, x-height, baseline and descender are kept to a minimum so that letters sit neatly on ruled guides.

There are 4 weights, Regular to Bold, and 6 stylistic sets. The same source also produces Outline, Cursive, Starters, Outline Arrows and Dotted versions for other classroom jobs. It joined Google Fonts on 28 May 2025.
