Genjyuu Gothic is Source Han Sans with its corners sanded off. Jikasei Font Kobo took the Japanese part of Adobe and Google’s big CJK sans, converted it to TrueType and rounded every corner, which turns a square-cut gothic into a maru gothic.
The TrueType step mattered as much as the rounding. Genshin Gothic, the sister font Genjyuu shares every spec with apart from the shapes, was tuned for office software. Line spacing was set to match M+ OUTLINE FONTS for Office programs, vertical writing was fixed in Office and LibreOffice, and characters missing from Source Han Sans were filled in from M+ at a matching weight. In exchange the set was narrowed to Japanese, bopomofo and half-width Hangul taken out.
Who drew what, then:
- Ryoko Nishizuka for the kana and ideographs, and Paul D. Hunt for Latin, Greek and Cyrillic, in the Source Han Sans credits.
- Coji Morishita for the M+ glyphs.
7 weights here, ExtraLight to Heavy, with 17,741 characters in the Regular. The author also made a less rounded Genjyuu Gothic L and a more rounded X, plus proportional and monospaced families, but his own advice is to start with this standard version since the differences are small. Version 1.002.20150607, the June 2015 update that repaired vertical writing.
The rounding shows best from Regular upward, in our view. At ExtraLight the strokes are too thin to carry much of it, and the author made that weight the same in the L, standard and X versions.
