There was never a Herr Von Muellerhoff. The name is invented, and so was the man’s handwriting, more or less.
Charles Bluemlein’s script collection belongs to the great days of American hand lettering, when from the early 1930s through the Second World War New York City alone kept around 200 professional letterers busy. His method was odd. He gathered real signatures and built complete alphabets out of them, and since the finished scripts no longer looked like anyone’s actual autograph, each got a made up name. The designs were then shown in the catalogs of Higgins Ink. Photo lettering finished that trade off, and digital type nearly erased it.
Alejandro Paul and Sudtipos revived the Bluemlein scripts and kept Bluemlein’s fictional names on them. This one has tiny lowercase letters under very tall capitals, so it looks most like a real signature when you set a name at a generous size and leave space around it.
