Thursday afternoon
Dear Alex,
I left the book by the window. There is a note on page twenty-three that I thought you would like. Bring it along on Thursday; we can finish the conversation over coffee.
See you there.

The capital I in Playwrite AU SA has serifs, small bars at top and bottom, which most school hands leave off. The k is made with 2 strokes. The q ends in a short flick to the right. These are the letters a South Australian teacher would recognize, because this font draws the cursive taught in that state.
All Australian states teach a modern cursive, and all of them trace it to 1990, when the Australian Education Council recommended a single model based on Tom Gourdie’s Simple Modern Hand, so a child who moved interstate would not have to relearn writing. The 5 main models have drifted since.
South Australia’s version is slanted and only semi-connected. The capitals look like print, there are no loops on the ascenders or descenders, and letters with a descender do not join the next letter, which keeps the hand moving quickly. G is open with no crossbar, the f stands apart with a straight tail, and r and z take their italic shapes.
Veronika Burian and José Scaglione drew it at TypeTogether for the Playwrite school series, 4 weights from Thin to Regular with no bold. There is a companion with ruled guides, Playwrite AU SA Guides, for practice sheets.
