Font Diner’s own blurb for this one reads like a motel billboard: a comfortable host off the interstate, air conditioning, cable television, pastries brought to your room, and a roll of quarters for a Magic Fingers massage. That is the world Stuart Sandler wanted, mid-century America seen from the highway.
Sandler started Font Diner in 1996 for retro type based on American vernacular lettering, and Jolly Lodger sits squarely in that catalog, next to Cherry Cream Soda and Fontdiner Swanky. It is tall and very condensed, so a long name fits on a narrow sign, and to us the letters have a faintly spooky wobble.
1 Regular, version 1.0 from March 2012, Latin with the Western accents. Put it on a neon-style sign or the cover of a pulp paperback.
