Pablo Impallari’s argument for Kaushan Script is that polishing a letter drains it. Every refinement in a digital typeface takes some energy out, he reasoned, so he left this one rough: the vertical strokes tilt at slightly different angles and the letters hop up and down off the baseline, the way a quick brush would leave them.
The other choice was practical. Script fonts usually have long ascenders and descenders, which makes the body of the letters tiny at web sizes, and Impallari kept them short so Kaushan reads at 16 px. That is small for a script. We would still put it in headings and on signs, where the brush energy shows.
Backers on Kickstarter paid for it, and 1 of them, Vyacheslav Kaushan, suggested the name. It joined Google Fonts in January 2012 with 397 characters and some stylistic alternates.
