Reading the clay of Uruk

Somewhere around 3200 BCE, in what is today Iraq, people began writing Sumerian in cuneiform, and the script is widely held to be the first writing system in the world. Noto Sans Cuneiform puts it on a screen.

The script outlived Sumerian itself. It moved on to Akkadian, Elamite, Hittite, Luwian and Urartian, out across present-day Iran, Turkey, Syria and Egypt, mixing word signs with syllabic and consonant signs, until Aramaic slowly pushed it aside from about 900 BCE.

Who needs it now? Assyriologists, museum caption writers, a student copying out a tablet, a teacher putting a sign list on a slide. The font maps 1,238 characters over 3 Unicode blocks, Early Dynastic Cuneiform among them, in a single Regular, and the “sans” in its name only tells you the signs are drawn unmodulated, in an even stroke.
