A Note On The Page

Playpen Sans Deva · Regular

A short letter, set in the family.

Thursday afternoon

Dear Alex,

I left the book by the window. There is a note on page twenty-three that I thought you would like. Bring it along on Thursday; we can finish the conversation over coffee.

See you there.

Type the same letter 3 times in Playpen Sans Deva and the copies will not all match. Each character has alternates, and a built-in shuffler swaps them in as you type, so no shape repeats too closely and a line reads like something written by hand. You do nothing to make it happen.

The Devanagari was worked out by drawing letters and combinations by hand over and over, then keeping the most natural shapes. Small gaps are left in the headline, the bar along the top of the letters, and some joins are deliberately imperfect, with the odd overlap. Pooja Saxena and Gunjan Panchal are credited alongside Laura Meseguer, Veronika Burian and José Scaglione of TypeTogether, and the work came after more than 2 years of research into handwriting education through the Primarium project.

It covers 3 Devanagari languages and over 332 written in Latin. Weights go from Thin to Extra Bold, 8 in all, and there is a small set of “reward” emoji drawn to match. Sister fonts handle Arabic, Hebrew, Thai, and Greek and Cyrillic with Pan-African Latin.

For a storybook in Devanagari or a birthday card, it is very hard to beat. We would not use it for anything that needs to look official.
