By the end of grade 2, Austrian children are expected to write legibly and fluently. That target comes from the elementary curriculum as revised in 2003, and the hand they are expected to write is the Österreichische Schulschrift, the Austrian school script. It goes back to 1946, when it was drawn on the foundations of the German Sütterlin script, and it was reformed several times before the current version arrived in 1995.
Playwrite AT Guides is that school script with the writing lines attached. Baseline, x-height, ascender and descender rules print under every letter so the child can see where an f starts and where its tail should land, and the underscore leaves the lines bare for practice. It shadows the main Playwrite Österreich family.
Here there is a Regular and an Italic.
We would print the sheets large, a whole word per line at most, because the guides are the point and they need room. TypeTogether’s Veronika Burian and José Scaglione drew it. Contextual alternates must be on for the letters to join, and there is no bold, so leave the B button alone.
