A Note On The Page
Playwrite AU VIC Guides · Regular
A short letter, set in the family.
Thursday afternoon
Dear Alex,
I left the book by the window. There is a note on page twenty-three that I thought you would like. Bring it along on Thursday; we can finish the conversation over coffee.
See you there.

Our class trip to Ballarat
A Year 1 copy sheet for a Melbourne school needs 2 things, the Victorian letter shapes and the ruled lines to write them on, and this font prints both at once. It is the guided companion to Playwrite AU VIC, so each letter arrives sitting in its own band of baseline, x-height, ascender and descender rules, there to show a child how tall an l is next to an a.
Why a separate Victorian cut at all? Back in 1990 the Australian Education Council asked every school to adopt 1 style, built on Tom Gourdie’s Simple Modern Hand, so a family moving interstate would not leave a child stranded. The states drifted anyway. Victoria’s script today has its own details, and this is the version its teachers would recognize.
There is 1 Regular weight, from Veronika Burian and José Scaglione at TypeTogether. Make sure contextual alternates are on in Word or the joins will not form, and resist the B and I buttons, since the faked styles they produce look poor on a worksheet. The underscore key gives an empty ruled stretch for the child’s own attempt.
