A Note On The Page
Playwrite DE SAS Guides · Regular
A short letter, set in the family.
Thursday afternoon
Dear Alex,
I left the book by the window. There is a note on page twenty-three that I thought you would like. Bring it along on Thursday; we can finish the conversation over coffee.
See you there.

Germany has no single school handwriting. Each state sets its own models and methods, and the shared goal is that a child leaves primary school, at the end of fourth grade, with a personal joined hand that flows and can be read; nobody is meant to copy the model letter for letter.
The models a German school is likely to meet:
- Ausgangsschrift (LA)
- Vereinfachte Ausgangsschrift (VA)
- Schulausgangsschrift (SAS), the 1 this font follows
- Grundschrift, around since 2010
Most states let schools choose among the first 3, all cursives. Grundschrift came from the Grundschulverband, the association of primary schools, as a more progressive route: mostly print, with a few cursive touches such as exit strokes. Bremen and Hamburg are among the states that allow it, and according to Das Deutsche Schulportal it is taught in 10% of German schools.
The Guides version of Playwrite DE SAS adds ruled lines to every letter, at baseline and x-height and at the limits of the extenders, and its underscore prints empty ruling for children to write on. Veronika Burian and José Scaglione drew it at TypeTogether. 1 Regular.
