Thursday afternoon
Dear Alex,
I left the book by the window. There is a note on page twenty-three that I thought you would like. Bring it along on Thursday; we can finish the conversation over coffee.
See you there.

Early this century Italian teachers started to worry about their pupils’ handwriting. It had been going downhill, and the response went 2 ways: some educators set about reviving the traditional cursive written into the national guidelines in 1945, while others went for new teaching schemes, among them a project called Scrittura Corsiva that pushed a modern cursive and won a good deal of attention.
TypeTogether’s Playwrite series has 2 Italian fonts for that reason, Tradizionale and this one, Moderna.
The hand is fully joined and stands completely upright, with short ascenders and descenders. Capitals are simplified print forms, with serifs on the I and plain legs on the M. f, g, j and y use a loop in the descender to link to the next letter, p and b close their bowls, and k is written in 2 strokes. The f also drops its top loop.
Veronika Burian and José Scaglione drew it, 4 weights from Thin to Regular, with 9 stylistic sets to try. It is too light for a heading on its own; give it a worksheet or the chalkboard menu of a café.
