This one leans and hurries. New Zealand teaches a fast, slanted modern cursive, and Playwrite NZ follows it: angular lowercase built on italic forms, letters only half joined, an f with no descender and a q that finishes on a short flick.
The model comes from Teaching Handwriting, a Ministry of Education publication first issued in 1985 at teachers’ request and revised as recently as 2025. It moves children from a simplified print script to semi-joined cursive, and schools build their own worksheets around it. TypeTogether updated the font in 2025 together with the Ministry, so the shapes here are the ones a New Zealand classroom is aiming for.
The capitals stay plain and print-like, with a few quirks a teacher would recognize: G left open without a crossbar, I with serifs, Y on a slanted stem.
Veronika Burian and José Scaglione drew it within the Playwrite project, 4 weights from Thin to Regular, 10 stylistic sets. There are siblings for the earlier stages, Playwrite NZ Basic for the first alphabet and Playwrite NZ Guides with writing lines. Google Fonts listed it in May 2024.
Outside school it makes a quick, informal hand for a party invite. Keep the Regular for that; Thin is too faint for anything but large sizes.
