The capital G gives it away, with neither a descender nor a crossbar. That is Grundskrift, the unlooped member of the 2 cursives Danish schools pick between, and Playwrite DK Uloopet is TypeTogether’s version of it. Uloopet means without loops.
The choice is deliberate. In 2019 the Ministry of Children and Education set out the primary requirements in a document called Danish Common Goals: by second grade, pupils write capitals and small letters by hand and on the keyboard, and by fourth grade they write in legible, connected handwriting. Preschool starts with simplified print letters, and somewhere in the middle of the second year or the start of the third, teachers, free to choose their own methods, settle on plain Grundskrift or on Grundskrift med løkker, the looped variation.
This is the plain one. Its habits, before you put it in front of a child:
- Slanted and round, with short ascenders and descenders and no loops anywhere.
- Capitals mostly simplified and close to print.
- g and y do not join the letter after them, and m and n start without a curved entry stroke, while b and p do connect despite the italic structure.
Veronika Burian and José Scaglione designed it. The variable font runs from Thin at 100 to Regular at 400, with static files for each, and it supports over 150 Latin-based languages. A Guides version with writing lines is published separately.
