A Note On The Page
Hachi Maru Pop · Regular
A short letter, set in the family.
Thursday afternoon
Dear Alex,
I left the book by the window. There is a note on page twenty-three that I thought you would like. Bring it along on Thursday; we can finish the conversation over coffee.
See you there.

See you after school!
In the 1970s and 1980s Japanese schoolgirls took up a round, bubbly way of writing called marumoji, and it caught on so widely that some schools banned it, while the winner of a round-letter contest was even issued as phototype. Hachi Maru Pop brings that hand back, mixed with the way girls write round letters now.
Hachi is Japanese for 8, a nod to the 1980s, a decade the designer counts among their favorites. Nonty, a freelance designer in Japan who started making type in 2017 and sticks to cute and fun faces, made this font specifically to offer to Google Fonts.
It is a big character set for a novelty face: hiragana, katakana and about 6,700 kanji covering JIS levels 1 and 2, plus Latin, Greek and Cyrillic, and it works in vertical text. Nonty is upfront that it gives up some readability for impact and suggests it for short accents. We agree. A sticker, a manga title, a line on a social post, set large.
