Of the 23 methods in the National Handwriting Association’s 2013 guide to teaching handwriting, 13 were fully joined or semi-joined modern cursive styles. That tells you where English classrooms have gone. The modern cursives grew out of the Italic Handwriting Revival of the early 20th century, and Alfred Fairbank (1895 to 1982) argued for modern italic writing based on chancery models, simpler and faster to write. Nelson Handwriting, Tom Gourdie Modern Hand, Jarman Handwriting, Marion Richardson and the Sassoon-Williams model are among the best known.
Playwrite GB J is the joined variant of the England model, the J standing for Joined. In this Guides version the letters carry baseline, x-height, ascender and descender lines behind them, and the underscore types the lines with no letter at all.
TypeTogether, Veronika Burian and José Scaglione made it for the Playwrite school fonts. Turn on contextual alternates in your word processor or the letters will not join, and then build a worksheet row by row.
