Thursday afternoon
Dear Alex,
I left the book by the window. There is a note on page twenty-three that I thought you would like. Bring it along on Thursday; we can finish the conversation over coffee.
See you there.

Written to the Ministry’s book. New Zealand teaches the handwriting style set out in Teaching Handwriting, a Ministry of Education publication that exists because teachers asked for guidance on what to teach. It first came out in 1985, the newest edition appeared in 2025, and it takes children from a simplified print script on to semi-joined cursive. Schools usually make their own materials from it.
A font helps with that. Playwrite NZ Guides is the companion to Playwrite New Zealand, which TypeTogether updated in 2025 in partnership with the Ministry, and it adds guide marks at the baseline, the x-height and the ascender and descender lines. Young writers can see the proportions they are aiming for. Type an underscore and you get only the guidelines, so blank practice rows are quick to build.
Veronika Burian and José Scaglione designed the Playwrite fonts out of the Primarium research into school handwriting around the world. This guided version has 1 Regular weight; the letters connect through contextual alternates, which some word processors leave switched off until you enable them.
