Thursday afternoon
Dear Alex,
I left the book by the window. There is a note on page twenty-three that I thought you would like. Bring it along on Thursday; we can finish the conversation over coffee.
See you there.

How do you settle on 1 school handwriting in a country with 4 big languages, Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba and English, and hundreds of regional ones besides? Nigeria mostly has not. Teaching in the language a child hears at home is the priority, money is short, and handwriting slipped down the list once computers arrived. Private schools with a budget sometimes buy in a foreign scheme such as Nelson Handwriting. In public schools children tend to copy whatever their parents and teachers write.
Going by the letters themselves, Playwrite NG Modern sits close to the plain modern cursives of English schools. It stands upright, and the l rises in a single straight stroke with no loop at the top.
TypeTogether made it, with Veronika Burian and José Scaglione as designers, for the Playwrite school series built on their Primarium research. There are 4 weights from Thin to Regular and a companion, Playwrite NG Modern Guides, with writing lines drawn in for practice sheets. Keep contextual alternates switched on, and set it at 18 px or more.
