Une jolie lettre pour mamie

Pupils in France write their first joined letters straight onto ruled paper, the Séyès system, a grid of horizontal and vertical lines from 1892 that fixes how tall each letter, ascender and descender should be. They meet it in kindergarten, at about age 5.

That joined hand is the écriture cursive, the traditional vertical cursive still taught in most French schools, and its shapes go back to Lettre Ronde, a script once written with a broad nib and ink. Playwrite FR Trad follows it, and this Guides version prints a set of writing lines behind each letter (baseline, x-height, ascenders, descenders) so a worksheet looks like a copybook page.

Trad is short for Traditionnelle, and France has a modern model as well: in 2013 the education ministry published 2 cursive typeface families of its own, Écriture A and Écriture B, both in a modern style.
