Between the early 1930s and World War II, New York City alone kept about 200 professional hand letterers in work, a job that photo lettering and later digital type nearly wiped out. Charles Bluemlein worked in that world with an odd method: he collected signatures, built complete script alphabets out of them, and, because no finished script resembled the signatures behind it, gave each new script a made-up name. Higgins Ink showed them in its catalogs.
Mr De Haviland is 1 of his inventions. Alejandro Paul and Sudtipos brought the Bluemlein scripts back in expanded digital versions, keeping the invented names as they were, and this one reached Google Fonts in November 2011.
Its small letters barely reach a third of the capital height, and the whole script sits very narrow. Set a name on a wedding invitation or the signature line of a certificate at 36 px or more, or it disappears.
