Brazil’s school hand arrived by way of Europe.
Vertical cursive was a 19th century idea, a simplified upright descendant of Roundhand in France and England and of Spencerian in the USA. In the north it did not last long. Spain, Portugal, Italy and France kept it, and still use it, and from there it traveled to former colonies including Argentina, Uruguay, Chile and Brazil. In Brazil it pushed out the models that had been popular until then, the American Palmer method and the commercial Roundhand of England.
Playwrite BR is TypeTogether’s version of what Brazilian children learn now, drawn by Veronika Burian and José Scaglione. Round letters, medium extenders, a slow curve. Many capitals are cursive and reach forward to join the lowercase that follows them, and the Q goes its own way in shape. Small details carry the national flavor: a crossbar on the q, an f whose bottom loop is mirrored, a round z with a looped tail.
We would keep it to a name, a note or a card line, in Light or Regular. 4 weights from Thin, plus a Guides sibling with the writing lines drawn in.
