Thursday afternoon
Dear Alex,
I left the book by the window. There is a note on page twenty-three that I thought you would like. Bring it along on Thursday; we can finish the conversation over coffee.
See you there.

18 degrees. That is the slope of litere de mână, the joined cursive Romanian children move to in first grade, and its narrow letters are drawn on a grid. Playwrite RO Guides gives them ruled lines to go with it.
Romania takes handwriting seriously. It is part of the curriculum goals for Comunicare în limba română, Communication in the Romanian language, and it is taught from the preparatory grade through second grade. Schools have some freedom in method, but the stages and the writing models are widely standardized. Children begin in the preparatory grade with print letters, scris de tipar or litere bloc, and then switch over to the cursive.
This is the companion to Playwrite România, the same letters with ruling added at the baseline and the x-height and at the top and bottom of the extenders, so a child always has a line to aim for. Veronika Burian and José Scaglione drew it at TypeTogether.
1 Regular weight. Print a page of it at a big size and let the pupils trace.
