A Note On The Page

Playwrite IN Guides · Regular

A short letter, set in the family.

Thursday afternoon

Dear Alex,

I left the book by the window. There is a note on page twenty-three that I thought you would like. Bring it along on Thursday; we can finish the conversation over coffee.

See you there.

Vere Foster, an Irish-born British diplomat, developed a handwriting style in the second half of the 19th century, and his model has had a long life in Indian schoolbooks. NCERT’s earlier English textbook series, Marigold, taught cursive in grade 2, to children of 7 or 8, with samples in a style close to Foster’s, and handwriting books from a major private publisher credit their samples to his model directly.

The official picture is looser. India’s National Curriculum Framework says children should learn 3 languages, beginning with their home tongue, and English can be 1 of them. It wants writing taught in grades 1 and 2 but names no method and no model. The new NCERT English books, called Mridang, teach print letters in grade 1, and neither the grade 1 nor the grade 2 book teaches cursive at all.

So a font like this fills a gap the documents leave open. Playwrite IN Guides is the companion to Playwrite India, with guidelines for the baseline, x-height, ascenders and descenders drawn into each letter, made by Veronika Burian and José Scaglione at TypeTogether.

There is 1 Regular weight, which for a copybook page is plenty.
