Tanzania’s primary school syllabus tells teachers to start with print letters and then move to cursive, and stops there. It shows no model alphabet. So the model in practice comes from the primers that classrooms use, many of them through free online libraries, and from what teachers do in class: a nearly upright precursive in Standard 1, then a fully joined cursive from Standard 2 onward. Playwrite TZ is TypeTogether’s reading of that joined hand.
It slopes, and every letter connects. The capitals are where it gets ornamental. A and H loop their crossbars, G is cursive in build yet has no descending stroke, and M and N, which you would expect to match, are made differently, only 1 of them in cursive form.
Lowercase extenders carry loops. m, n and v start with a curved entry stroke while w does without, and q carries a mirrored loop in its descender.
Veronika Burian and José Scaglione made it for the Playwrite school series, which Google added in May 2024. 4 weights, Thin to Regular. Make sure contextual alternates are on, or the joins fall apart, and use it big for name cards and classroom walls.
