Thursday afternoon

Dear Alex,

I left the book by the window. There is a note on page twenty-three that I thought you would like. Bring it along on Thursday; we can finish the conversation over coffee.

See you there.

Children in Tasmania spend years 1 and 2 on a sloped print the state calls the Beginners Alphabet, and only in year 3 do they move on to Pre-Cursive. Edu TAS Beginner is that first hand, the one children copy off the board in their first school years.

Tina and Corey Anderson drew it for the Foundation Fonts for Australian Schools, a set built because each Australian state teaches its own handwriting model in lower primary (a few states share one). The Regular is about as heavy as a pencil line, which is the point of it: a child should look at the printed letter and recognize the mark they make themselves. Medium, Semi Bold and Bold go up from there, handy for headings on a worksheet.

You will notice how short the small letters are against the capitals, about half their height, which leaves the ascenders on the d and h plenty of room to climb.

The character set is lean, 126 characters covering basic Latin and the common math signs. Schools on Google Workspace get it straight in Docs and Slides; the complete OpenType build lives on the project’s GitHub.
