Queensland children start school on QBeginners Print and move on to QBeginners Precursive somewhere around Year 3 or 4. Edu QLD Hand is a font of that school model, drawn by Tina and Corey Anderson as part of the AU School Handwriting Fonts project, which builds families to Australian education standards, and published through Sorkin Type.
The Regular was drawn to look like the line a pencil makes. Overshoots are kept to a minimum, so the round letters line up with the ruled lines of an exercise book, which matters when a child is copying them.
There are 4 weights, Regular to Bold. The clever part sits in the 6 stylistic sets: the project’s build freezes them into separate variants, Precursive, Cursive, Starters, Outline, Outline Arrows and Dotted, so 1 source gives a teacher both the arrowed tracing sheets for beginners and a joined hand for older pupils.
The first release came in March 2024 and Google Fonts added it in May 2025. Edu QLD Beginner, an earlier and separate Queensland family, has been there since 2022.
