Belgian children learn 2 different joined hands depending on which side of the language border they grow up on. In Flanders the model is a sloped continuous cursive close to Dutch handwriting; in Wallonia and the French-speaking schools of Brussels it is upright, the style France favors. Playwrite BE WAL is the upright one.
TypeTogether, with Veronika Burian and José Scaglione, drew it for the Playwrite series, school fonts built on the research of Primarium, which documents how primary schools around the world teach handwriting. In both Belgian communities the kids start on print letters in kindergarten and move to connected writing once primary school begins.
The extenders are very long. The whole hand is written slowly, every letter joined, with loops, knots and curved entry strokes, and the z has a flat top plus a knot while the t is crossed on 1 side only. Capitals get the decoration: crossbars through T and Z, a vertical spine in the S.
4 weights from Thin 100 to Regular 400, contextual alternates for the joins, 9 stylistic sets, and more than 150 Latin-based languages, Vietnamese included. A Guides version exists for the classroom.
Long extenders need room between lines. Set a card or an invitation in it with the leading opened well past the default, or the loops of 1 line will tangle with the next.
