Indonesia set its national handwriting model by ministerial decree in 1983. A revision followed in 2009, but the original is still preferred, and children learn it in 2 stages: huruf lepas, loose letters, and then huruf sambung, joined cursive. Workbooks from the country’s popular private publishers follow it.
The model has French roots. Playwrite ID is an upright, connected cursive with very long ascenders and descenders and round letters meant to be written slowly. Its own quirks are a knot in the b, an s that never turns cursive, and capitals such as Q, K and L that mix printed and decorative strokes.
