Hit the B button on a line of Playwrite DE VA Guides and the word processor will invent a bold of its own, which TypeTogether warns comes out poor. There is 1 Regular weight here, no bold and no italic, so leave the B and the I alone.
VA is the Vereinfachte Ausgangsschrift, the simplified joined hand. In most German states a primary school chooses its cursive model from 3, and VA is the 1 that sits beside LA and SAS on that short list, with the shared aim that a pupil leaves fourth grade writing a fluent personal hand.
Veronika Burian and José Scaglione drew it for Playwrite, the school font project built on Primarium, a survey of how children are taught handwriting around the world. The Guides cut prints the baseline, x-height, ascender and descender lines behind every letter.
Getting the joins to work takes 1 setting. In Word, go to Font, then the Advanced tab, and switch on Contextual Alternates. Google Docs users add the font itself through More Fonts. 9 stylistic sets are tucked in as well.
Off the worksheet we would reach for the plain Playwrite DE VA, which has 4 weights from Thin to Regular and no lines in the way.
