In a Romanian first grade, children leave the print letters of the preparatory year, ‘scris de tipar’, and move on to ‘litere de mână’, a continuous cursive sloped at 18° and kept narrow on a grid. The curriculum, Comunicare în limba română, gives handwriting real weight, and the models are largely standard from school to school. Playwrite RO is that cursive as a font, drawn by Veronika Burian and José Scaglione at TypeTogether for the Playwrite series, which grew out of Primarium, a study of how primary schools around the world teach handwriting.
What makes it Romanian:
- a straight spine in the capital S, and a G with a shape of its own
- crossbars on X and Z, capital and small
- knots in many of the lowercase letters
- an f with a loopless descender that joins the next letter from its crossbar, and a q with a short exit stroke
It moves slowly, with looped ascenders and descenders of medium length.
There are 4 weights from Thin to Regular and no bold or italic, so leave the B and I buttons alone or the app will fake them badly. The joins depend on contextual alternates; in Word you switch those on in the Advanced tab of the Font dialog. For worksheets there is a sibling, Playwrite RO Guides, that adds a visual aid for young writers.
