Polish children learn to read from a serif typeface and learn to write in a cursive that stands upright and mostly does without loops. The national core curriculum, the podstawa programowa, says very little about handwriting beyond the goal: write by hand, legibly and fluently, in sentences and continuous text. Primers fill in the rest, and the model they show is fully joined and vertical, with capitals and small letters taught at the same time.

Playwrite PL is that model, drawn by Veronika Burian and José Scaglione at TypeTogether. The lowercase looks restrained, its ascenders without loops apart from the f. Below the line it is different. The g, j and y have looped descenders, and so do their capitals, G, J and Y, where the loop carries the pen on to the next letter. The k is built from 2 strokes, and m, n and r start with a curved entry stroke.
