Thursday afternoon
Dear Alex,
I left the book by the window. There is a note on page twenty-three that I thought you would like. Bring it along on Thursday; we can finish the conversation over coffee.
See you there.

Start with the f. Its descender loop is mirrored, and it is 1 of a handful of small habits in Playwrite PT that come straight from the way Portuguese children are taught to write. The o, v, w and z tie little knots where the stroke doubles back, the z has a flat top, and m, n, v and w all begin on a curved entry stroke, so a word arrives already moving.
It is part of Playwrite, TypeTogether’s school font series by Veronika Burian and José Scaglione, which grew out of Primarium, a project recording the handwriting models taught in primary schools country by country. Portuguese schools get to choose their own method as long as they meet the national curriculum goals. Most start 5 and 6 year olds on letra impressa, print letters beginning with the capitals, and then move them on to escrita vertical, a fully joined upright cursive. Playwrite PT is that second stage, continuous and vertical, with looped ascenders and descenders of medium length.
The capitals are where it gets decorative. You will not mistake its Q for anyone else’s, and the S stands on a vertical stem.
What the download gives you:
- 4 weights, Thin 100 up to Regular 400
- 9 stylistic sets, with contextual alternates doing the joins
- support for over 150 Latin-based languages, Vietnamese among them
Those joins depend on contextual alternates, so in Word open the Advanced tab of the font dialog and turn them on, or the letters will sit apart. Leave the B and I buttons alone too. There is no bold or italic in the family, and what the software fakes looks poor.
For classrooms there is a sibling, Playwrite PT Guides, made as a visual aid for children. Outside school we would use the main font for cards and short notes, and keep Thin for 28 px and up.
